Until a new prime minister is appointed, Imran Khan will be in charge of Pakistan

Even if the parliament is dissolved, Imran Khan will remain the prime minister of Pakistan until someone is appointed as the prime minister of the interim government.

The announcement was made in a statement issued by the office of the President of Pakistan on Monday, according to a report in the country's English daily Dawn.

It said Imran would continue as the country's prime minister until a new caretaker prime minister is appointed under Article 224A (4) of the constitution.

Article 224 (a) of the Constitution of Pakistan provides for the appointment of a caretaker Prime Minister. If the Leader of the Parliament or the Leader of the Opposition fails to agree on the appointment of a caretaker Prime Minister.

Then the incumbent Prime Minister and the Chief Minister shall continue their official duties until the caretaker Prime Minister and the caretaker Chief Minister are appointed.

Earlier on Monday, the Cabinet Secretariat of Pakistan issued a statement. "Imran Khan's term as Prime Minister of Pakistan has come to an end and this order will be considered effective from now on," it said.

According to Article 94 of the Constitution of Pakistan, the President of Pakistan can request the incumbent Prime Minister to continue in office "until the next Prime Minister takes office".

Shortly afterwards, President Arif Alvi's office announced the dissolution of parliament. Pakistan's constitution calls for fresh elections within 90 days of the dissolution of parliament.

Opposition parties have stated they will not run in the by-elections, but Imran Khan has won a landslide victory in the by-elections.
